One year regular MBA and Executive MBA Program

I am sure my fellow one year MBA graduates would agree. There are times when prospects (and particularly their parents) put down a downright statement that one year MBA programs are Executive MBA programs. Speaking to some of the parents, once I had a really hard time how one year regular MBA programs (like ISB – PGP) are not same as Executive MBA (like ISB-PGPMAX) programs. So much for marketing of one year MBA! Since a lot many questions are centered around duration of MBA programs, I have decided to pre-empt this confusion by addressing any questions on comparison upfront in General Education MBA admission consultants workshops.

The main reasons why such doubts creep up in heads is probably because one year Executive programs propagated by Tier-1 institutes in India (like IIMs) involved a one year of regular association till one year regular MBA started and changed the whole management education dynamics in India. I’ve heard of Distance MBA courses for executives running for three years also. Prospects to MBA programs must list out their priorities, work-life balance before they make a decision on applying for a program.

Here, I would like to enumerate some of the differences that exist between regular MBA programs and Executive MBA programs. The case in point is ISB. Although this is not an exhaustive list of differential features, but I am sure, this will help candidates (and some of the parents) understand the nuances and apply for the correct program.

1 year regular MBA program

Executive MBA Program

Contact hours are in the range of 680 to 720 hours per program (in a year) Contact hours are less than 50% of a regular program in a year
Pedagogy is orthodox involving physical presence Primary mode is physical presence, but most work is done online
Students stay on campus, live together for a year Students are expected to stay on campus only during interaction hours.
Much rigorous program with a regular exam schedule Work with study type of program where focus is more on collaboration and tools and not on checking individual performance
Average work experience of a candidate is 5 years Average work experience is more than 10 years.
Program output is suitable for people who are looking for career shifts Program is tailor made for lateral jumps and brand association
Students can opt for exchange programs Exchange programs non-existent. Students get option of learning tours to other countries
Students get help for career advancement Students are mostly employers or sponsored candidates, don’t really need assistance for jobs.

I could go on and on about differences, but the essential ones are mentioned. Feel free to get in touch with General Education experts – MBA application consultants for more help on such differences between regular and executive MBA programs. Factors Determining the ISB Admission Eligibility

An MBA from an esteemed b-school like ISB gives students the opportunity to experience fast growth in their career. Moreover, it’s a tool through which people can rise to top management positions easily and fast. However, there are a number of factors, which play a big role in the ISB admission process.

Discussed here are some of the essential components that determine the rejection or selection of a candidate’s candidature in the Indian School of Business.

Academics

Academic qualification is one of the most essential factors that MBA application consultants first take a look at for judging a candidate’s eligibility in ISB. A candidate’s aptitude for studies is well reflected in his/her previous examinations’ performance and this is the thing, which an admission committee first looks at.  As an ISB applicant, you must have above average scores in all the examinations and courses that you have undertaken.

Background

Your background plays a big role as well. You need to convince the adcom person reviewing your candidature that you fit the bill. In order to do that you should highlight your important attributes in your profile. Whether it’s your community service, extracurricular activities, conspicuous background or work experience, it should be there in your CV. ISB generally looks for candidates having potency. However, that doesn’t mean that if you have had a normal upbringing, your ISB admission becomes difficult. The only thing is, these candidates need to add an extra zing to their application in order to stand apart from the crowd.

Work experience

It’s important to have professional experience. So, make sure you have some rich and varied experiences before applying for the b-school of your choice. At least take a few initiatives that will give you learning experiences in terms of team building activities and leadership. It’s also important to get in touch with one of the reputed and experienced MBA application consultants to build a strong application. An expert consultant knows exactly what admissions committees actually look for and so a session with the professional will help you find what anecdotes you need to use for enhancing your application to the fullest.

Extra-curricular activities

Participation in extracurricular activities at university, school or work proves to be very useful for candidates applying in ISB. Butjust showcasing your participation is not going to serve the purpose. You must be able to understand the importance of these activities in your life, how they have helped you to become more balanced as a person and so on. Remember, the reviewer would be more interested in knowing whether and how the participation helped you to hone qualities like team spirit, managing, organizing, and leadership—the essential elements of an MBA.

Community work

An experience in community work makes an average ISB application very appealing. B-schools are usually looking to create leaders who are aware of their duties towards their society. Several organizations working for corporate social causes prefer to recruit only those individuals whose values match with their own. So, if you still do not have any community experience, start to work on it immediately.

GMAT score

Your GMAT score has a big role to play in the ISB admission process. Having a higher GMAT score will maximize your chances of getting admitted in the Indian School of Business but at the same time your profile needs to have the potency as well. Avail the GMAT preparation online service of an institute that offers GMAT tutorials online and prepare  yourself for the GMAT test.

MBA admissions application mistakes to avoid

When MBA applicants rush or get stressed during the admissions process for a top business school, they are likely to make mistakes.  It’s not typos that we are concerned about, we are talking about the mistakes, which can torpedo the candidacy of an applicant.  Here we are going to discuss about the three common application mistakes, which can turn an applicant from a hero to a zero in the eyes of an MBA admissions officer.

Not being able to answer the questions that are asked

Applicants often fail to answer the MBA admissions essay questions explicitly and that is one of the biggest mistakes they do. This mainly happens when an applicant dye to bring up his/her specific achievement but doesn’t find an essay, which allows him/her to cover it. It is then that he/she devotes an essay, which is supposed to be about one thing to something that’s entirely different. Sometimes an applicant even badly recycles an essay from one application to another. The interviewee need to be very careful when answering the MBA admission essay questions. B-school admission officers actually ask these questions for a specific reason. They don’t just ask for the ritual of asking the similar questions year after year, they in fact want to hear the answers from the candidates. Providing them anything else makes their job difficult and makes your application valueless. However, the same applies for MBA admission interviews as well. You should always answer the questions that you have been actually asked.

Submitting more documents than required

Applicants think that if they submit more documents than required, their candidacy will be strong. This is a very wrong concept applicants generally have. If you are asked to submit two letters of recommendation, there is no need to submit three. Admissions officers needs to go through hundreds of applications. So, they are definitely not going to relish spending an extra few minutes on your application when there are a number of applications to get through. If you have a problem choosing from among so many overwhelming recommenders, then that’s a sign that you are a strong candidate and that’s a very good news;you need not present all those letters of recommendation.

Applying for a B-School where you don’t want to get admission

As one of the reputed MBA admission consultants, we would always suggest you not to apply to b-schools where you don’t want to go. We recommend you to not to apply to fall back b school where you have a definite chance of getting an admission but still you don’t want to do an MBA from those b schools. Very often applicants come to consultants and say: “I applied to four schools and got in  only one of them, but I don’t want to get admitted there join that b school. What should I do? Wait and reapply the next year? This is a very common and a big mistake that MBA applicants make. Obviously life circumstances change sometimes and an applicant may come with a few legitimate reasons for changing the school after applying. Apart from those good reasons, you must only apply to schools, which you actually want to join. By applying you are just wasting everyone’s time and this act of yours may take away your energy and attention from applications, which should have your maximum focus.

ISB interviews: What to expect (in admissions interview) when you are expecting a call

For all those who like to read non-fiction, the title would have generated a smile.  So apart from the regular laundry list that you would see on various forums (or fora) for interview preparation, one needs a handful of common sense coupled with ISB interview panel’s expectation. From experience, I can safely say that one needs to have a balanced approach towards interviews i.e. Don’t overplay your strengths and don’t dismiss your experience as trivial. Some of the best candidates maintain the poise and not get carried away with excitement of being called for an admission interview with ISB. Here’s my laundry list for preparation of ISB admission interview. I am sure, this will generate a lot of I-already -knew-that expressions, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

  1. High Self-confidence is a must. One doesn’t need to be flighty, but confidence and poise should reflect from answers. There’s no point in ruing or defending something that is beyond your control, so focus should be the key to presenting what you have written in the essays.
  2. Since airtime is going to be in your favor, do structure your answers to expected questions well. Use examples as much as possible to explain the situations and circumstances under which decisions were taken.
  3. ISB is not looking for wannabe entrepreneurs all the time. ISB wants students who are bright and can become good leaders down the line. To become a good leader, one has to be a good follower and also a good employee.
  4. Your pitch should focus on your strengths. The evaluators are always looking out for the areas where they can dig in and find out real YOU.
  5. Focusing on more than 2 strengths in a half an hour of discussion is a waste. ISB alumni can very well open up the realities of such Jack-of-all-trades. It is always recommended to be self-aware, focus on work and have a clear view of where you want to go if selected. This clarity is what most interview panels are seeking and award high scores on basis of such clarity in thoughts.

All the best for your ISB interview.
